Handball News (23/01/2008) Croatia keep dream alive |
An injury-plagued Croatia fought well to beat Montenegro.
A week ago no one believed that Montenegro would be able to play a close match against Croatia, but with the stars such as Ivano Balic, Blazenko Lackovic and Petar Metlicic not fully fit and in best form, Croatia were not on top.
This gave Montenegro a chance to fight for the points.
And at half time the Euro debutants were leading. Balic only played eight minutes in the first half and he had to leave the playing court with an injury.
He was back in business for the second half and he was the architect of the Croatian game when they took back the initiative. After this Balic was injured again (under his eye) and he had be substituted again.
But this time the Croatians were doing better without their star and they kept Montenegro at bay. Balic returned on court eight minutes before the end to inspire Croatia open a wider gap and win the game 34-26.
Line player Igor Vori was the leading scorer of Croatia with nine goals. Petar Kapisoda scored seven for Montenegro.
Croatia have six points. The match against Norway on Thursday can be a match for a place in the semi finals. |
