Handball News (24/01/2008) Win takes Danes to Euro semi-final |
Slovenia 23:28 Denmark (11:15)
Denmark and Slovenia both came determined to win their last match of the Main Round and secure a place in the semi-finals.
Both teams played aggressively in defence, and whilst the Danes paid careful attention to Zorman and Pajovic, the Slovenians did their best to keep Knudsen at bay on the line.
The best player on court was Kasper Hvidt who made 11 saves in the first half and helped his teammates to stay in the lead throughout the match. He also stopped two seven metre penalty shots.
Although not playing at their best, the Danes went into the half time break four goals in front.
In the second half it was Kasper Hvidt again (he finished the match with 18 saves) who decided the match.
The experienced Lars Christiansen and others made the difference bigger and bigger.
In the 47 minute there was already a six goal difference, the biggest in the match was seven.
The Slovenians tried but again missed their chances and the Danes deservedly earned two further points in the Main Round.
Post match comments
Ulrik Wilbek, Danish coach: "I think this third consecutive match showed how tired the players are. We may be were a little more fresh because Slovenia had two very difficult matches in past days. That is why they were little slower. This took us to semi-final."
Bo Spellerberg, Danish player: "I think we once again played really well. Slovenia had itheir chances and offered great resistance. We wanted to make a big difference at the beginning but we did not succeed that is why we had to play with full strength during whole 60 minutes."
Miro Pozun, Slovenian coach: "I have to congratulate Denmark for good performances during the tournament. They really deserved theb top spot. I think we needed too much energy yesterday against Norway and could not play so well today. Nevertheless I am very content with our result and the way we played"
Jure Natek, Slovenian player: "I think we put up a good resistance against Denmark. We tried, and tried hard, but made too many mistakes. This decided the match." |
